Eco Schools
Green Flag with Merit 2023-2024.

Congratulations to Heatherley's Eco-committee who have worked really hard to achieve the green flag award with merit for Heatherley. Mrs Woodhouse and I are extremely proud of all the efforts and hard word the children have put into this. They have all grown in confidence and blossomed into fantastic Eco warriors for the school and the planet! Well done.

Eco -Schools at Heatherley
The Eco - Schools programme is designed to raise environmental awareness amongst young people and in England it is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. Internationally, the programme is the largest educational programme in the world present in nearly 70 countries with millions of children participating.
Our school is now part of this global community working to create environmental change for the benefit of our children and future generations. The Eco-Schools programme empowers pupils, raises environmental awareness, improves the school environment and can also lead to financial saving. Being an active member of the programme will be something your child will remember for the rest of their life.
The programme focuses on ten important environmental topics:
1. Biodiversity
2. Energy
3. Global Citizenship
4. Healthy Living
5. Litter
6. Marine
7. School Grounds
8. Transport
9. Waste
10. Water
Every school taking part in the Eco-Schools around the world programme follow the same simple Seven Step framework. This usually takes schools between one and two academic years to complete. After achieving our first Green Flag, our school can continue in the programme and achieve multiple Green Flags whilst continuing to work on and promote environmental issues. We hope you are as excited about our eco-journey as we are!
The Seven Steps
Step 1 Eco Committee
An application form is handed out at the beginning of each academic year to choose our eco committee. One child from each class has been chosen. These children are responsible for the running of Eco-Schools along with Mrs Woodhouse and Miss Unwin.

Step 2 Environmental Review
We have completed a set of fact-finding questions linked to the 10 Eco-School topics. This has helped the eco committee understand what environmental work our school is already doing or what needs to be improved.
