Reading in Key Stage 2
Reading in Key Stage 2
Reading is integrated in all subjects across our curriculum, but our stand-alone whole class reading lessons are taught weekly from Year 3 to Year 6. In these lessons, we focus on the comprehension and word reading skills. The teaching of these reading skills are informed by an acronym called Reading VIPERS to aid the recall of 6 domains of reading. It stands for: Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarise.
Storytime or poetry take place daily. Children are given time to read in school and recommend their favourite books to their peers, and peer group support reading takes place regularly. Teachers model reading to their classes.
Reading at home: Children are expected to read at home a minimum of twice a week, and children are expected to be responsible for changing their own books. Books are always available for children in school.
