Reading in Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1
Our reading sessions take place twice a week, following our Little Wandle Phonics scheme. These sessions are in small groups with our fully decodable books and focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension skills. Children who may need extra support with their reading, are also read to individually with a TA/Teacher weekly. Reading is integrated in all subjects of the curriculum alongside our daily Little Wandle sessions. These Little Wandle sessions last around 25-30 minutes. This is to prepare your child for the phonics screening check taken in the summer term. In Year 2, children are also taught comprehension skills through our Reading VIPERS acronym. Our English lesson focus is around a book, which matches the theme of the term. Story time or poetry take place daily, and teachers model reading to their class.
Reading at home: Children are expected to read a minimum of three times a week with their decodable reading book. Children are awarded dojos for every read at home. If books have been read during the week, they will be changed once a week supported by the class teacher. They will also be taking home a sharing at home book, your child may not be able to read this independently, and this could be shared with an adult to increase their love of reading.
